Breastfeeding in Public - Your rights

The Equality Act 2010

"A business cannot discriminate against a woman who is breastfeeding a child (of any age)"

If a business owner asks you to leave the reason for this cannot be because you are breastfeeding your child - and you are protected from this by Law.  If the request is due to another reason then the business owner does have the right to do this (for example if you were using offensive language). However, they must prove it is for a different reason should you decide to claim discrimination.

The Equality Act 2010 also protects the rights of those who are with you and as a result those in the company of a breastfeeding mother also cannot be discriminated against.

Feeding out and about!

During the early days you may prefer to practice at home to build your confidence. Feeding your baby in front of family and friends will help you relax when feeding in front of other people. You can also come along to your local Cherubs Group to help you relax. Another helpful tip is to practice in front of a mirror!

These tips may help you when going out and about:

  • Plan where you are going and choose locations that are perhaps known for being breastfeeding friendly.  They may own a Cherubs Charter or be recommended to you via a breastfeeding friend or a health professional
  • Non-wired/nursing bras are best to wear as they can be easily unhooked or pulled up/down.  A loose fitting, stretchy or button through top also allows for quick access once your baby starts showing he/she is ready for a feed.  You may also wish to use a baby sling, scarf or muslim cloth to cover baby and breast as you feed.  This may make you feel more confident
  • Take a friend or family member with you when you go out - having personal support may also help you feel more confident
  • Avoid those toilets! You wouldn't eat in there so neither should your baby

And remember, if you have a good experience let us know!
